My payment was declined

Common reasons for declined payments and how to resolve them.

3 min read

If your payment was declined, don't worry – this is usually easy to fix. There are several common reasons why a payment might not go through, and most can be resolved quickly.

đź’ˇ A declined payment does NOT mean you've been charged. If the payment failed, no money was taken from your account.

Common Reasons for Declined Payments

  • Incorrect card details: A typo in your card number, expiry date, or CVV code.
  • Insufficient funds: Not enough balance in your account or credit limit reached.
  • Expired card: Your card may have expired and needs to be updated.
  • Bank security block: Your bank may have flagged the transaction as suspicious.
  • International transaction block: Some cards block purchases from foreign countries.
  • Daily spending limit: You may have reached your card's daily transaction limit.

How to Fix a Declined Payment

1
Double-check your card details

Verify the card number, expiration date, and CVV are entered correctly. Even one wrong digit will cause a decline.

2
Check your available balance

Make sure you have enough funds or credit available for the purchase amount.

3
Contact your bank

Call the number on the back of your card. They can tell you exactly why the payment was declined and unblock it if needed.

4
Try a different payment method

If the issue persists, try using a different card or payment method like PayPal.

⚠️ If you see a pending charge on your bank statement after a declined payment, don't worry – this is a temporary authorization hold that will be released within 3-5 business days.

What to Tell Your Bank

When you call your bank, let them know:

  • You're trying to make a legitimate online purchase
  • The merchant name that will appear on your statement
  • The approximate amount of the transaction
  • Ask them to allow the transaction and remove any blocks
